Thank you to everyone who participated in and supported the many events that have come to make up National Autism Awareness Month as a fun, educational time of year celebrating those we love with autism in the Dan River Region and in our hearts. More than 1,000 of you participated in a local Autism Awareness Month event in April! Whether it was going blue on 4/2, viewing a sensory friendly movie, Zumba dancing, running, walking, cycling, or volunteering, YOU helped raise autism awareness in our community. Thank you!
We owe special thanks to everyone who made each of the Autism Awareness Month events, including the 5k, a success!
First, thank you to each of the Team Captains who stepped up to lead and motivate their teams to participate in the 5k. Together, the teams were able to raise more than $27,000 to fund projects in our community that will benefit individuals with autism. Way to go, Team Captains!
We also owe thanks to the many generous sponsors and community partners who provided financial or in-kind support to make these events possible. Special thanks to our presenting sponsors, Center for Pediatric Therapies, The Hughes Center, and The Madeline Centre for making the 5k possible. Thanks also to the Danville Science Center and the Danville Family YMCA for hosting educational and recreational activities to support our cause. Thank you to Me’s Burgers and Brews and Perfections Salon and Spa for going blue!
We also owe our appreciation to the organizations and businesses that provided logistical support to the 5k and the Autism Ride. Thank you to Danville Parks and Recreation for the use of their beautiful Riverwalk Trail and their continued support of recreational events in our area that promote health and wellness for all individuals and families. Thank you to the City of Danville Transportation Department for providing use of their shuttles on race day! And thanks to Big Sky Rents & Events for providing the tent and bounce house on race day!
Thank you to everyone involved in making the 2nd Annual Autism Ride a success. Josh King, his family and friends worked diligently to make the ride a seamless, fun experience for all cyclists, and they did a great job! Thank you to the Autism Ride sponsors: UPS, Davenport Energy, and Terry Blakely State Farm Agency.
We owe special thanks to our volunteers, who worked hard to make each event a success! Our volunteer groups include Danville After Hours Rotary, Tunstall Interact Club, the TEACH Club of Danville, Telvista, Center for Pediatric Therapies, Building Blocks and CIT. We also had several individuals volunteer not with a group. We could not have managed the events without you, every step of the way!
Thank you to LC Moore, Lee Eagle, and Forest ‘Cas’ Dalton from the Danville Running Club & Fitness Club for for ensuring the runners and walkers had a well marked course! Thank you to Adam Jones and the rest of the staff at The Brick for timing the race (view results here!).
Thank you to Four Seasons Pest Control and American National Bank for providing water to our runners and walkers!
Thank you to Von Wellington Photography for the many awesome photos!
Thank you to WAKG and WBTM, the Register & Bee, the Piedmont Shopper, Mark Aaron with River City TV — all of our local media have been so supportive of raising autism awareness!
Thanks to all of you – runners, walkers, cyclists, team captains, volunteers, sponsors – TOGETHER, we have raised more than $27,000 for the Autism Fund!
And more importantly, we have raised awareness about autism in our community!
